As someone who’s always preferred to focus on her extremities rather than her core, it’s taken me a while to admit that I wouldn’t be able to achieve as a dancer without a strong core. (Good dance teachers know this — it’s why they incorporate crunches, oblique work and push-ups into their warm-ups, so that we have support for all the twisting and reaching we do.)

And even after all of my work with physical therapists, this week was the first time I learned that it’s the deep abdominals that are essential to strengthen for back support, rather than the superficial abs. It’s never to late to learn, and incorporate it into my weekly exercise…
